Aleppo Citadel (قلعة حلب) von twiga-swala

View of the fortified tower and Inner Gate of the Aleppo Citadel before the on-going Syrian Civil War. Although the current structure is mostly medieval, some sort of fortification has existed on the Citadel Hill since at least the 3rd millennium BC. It is therefore considered one of the oldest still existing castles in the world. The current appearance of the fortress is mostly due to the renovations and additions from the rule of Saladin, right after the era of the Crusades in the Middle East.
